One of the unique applications the Sega Saturn has over Nintendo 64 and Playstation is the ability to play Video-cd discs. Video-cd uses a technology called M-Peg this allows Saturn owners to run movies and music videos in the same way you would watch a VCR. The M-Peg cartridges when released were priced so high that not many were sold, but now with Saturn sales in decline you can pick up an M-Peg Video card fairly cheaply.
So what can the M-Peg card do for you?
I can’t speak for the rest of the world but in Europe (PAL) there are literally thousands of video-cds with titles ranging from Pamela Anderson’s - Barbwire movie to ABBA - Gold music video compilation. The Video-cd will produce advanced picture quality and clear digital sound.
How can I get hold of Video-cds ?
You will rarely see video-cds in the shops now but, you can order many titles from companies such as MCNO and CDTELESHOP, there you can order a large amount of video-cds.
Will an M-Peg card give my Saturn a new lease of life ?
YES
Is the M-Peg card an official Sega product ?
YES
Where can I get the Video-cd card ?
That is a tricky question because they are quite hard to find, most of the larger Saturn stockists sell them but I would recommend trying to get hold of a second hand card because I managed to pick mine up for £40 English Pounds.
Do CDi discs work using the M-Peg card ?
Yes and No, most CDi movies will play but CDi Interactive discs will not.
